In our last post, we looked at the ways you can reduce heating costs in the winter with a heat pump. But heat pumps are only one way to provide warmth to a house here in Florida. For homes with connections to gas mains, a gas furnace is often the best option for comfort.
Because we experience mild winters, heating costs over the season in Florida are lower than in most other parts of the country. In most cases, however, the costs are still higher than they should be. To help you enjoy the best performance from your furnace this winter while keeping your bills low, we’ve provided some money-saving tips.
Always have the furnace professionally maintained
This is an essential step for many reasons (furnace safety, long service life, fewer repairs). Along with all its other benefits, regular professional maintenance helps a furnace run at the highest possible energy efficiency. If you keep up with maintenance for your furnace each year, he heating system should retain 95% of its energy efficiency rating through most of its service life.
Use smart thermostat settings
Just pushing the thermostat setting up and down based on how the house feels at any time leads to wasteful furnace operation. We recommend putting the thermostat at 68°F, which is sufficient warmth for the majority of people. At this temperature, the furnace will not need to run often (especially in our weather). The loss of heat to the outside will also slow down, leading to better heat retention. During the night, when people are asleep, lower the thermostat another 8–10°F.
Changed the furnace filter regularly
This is probably the #1 reason people end up paying more to run their furnace than they should. The air filter for the furnace protects the interior from dust and debris that comes through the return air vent. It will eventually clog up, and the restriction on airflow will force the furnace’s blower fan to drain more power. A clogged filter can trigger many other troubles, so have a new filter put in every 1 to 3 months (depending on the type of filter).
Never delay when calling for repairs
When you detect any signs your furnace isn’t working the way it should, contact HVAC professionals right away to fix it—even if heating performance seems unaffected. A strange sound, a drop in airflow, the furnace turning on and off rapidly, and odd smells from the vents can all indicate a major malfunction that will create strain and higher bills (not to mention a threat of the furnace breaking down). The sooner you have the problem professionally corrected, the easier the repair will be.
